Ronas Eternal Jet
1990 Chestnut AQHA Gelding
How do you describe your best friend? EJ is my (Laura's) once in a lifetime horse. I purchased him as a three year old off the racetrack when I was sixteen years old. I sold three horses to buy him and have never regretted it. (Isn't it great when you can look back at a long ago tough decision and be content knowing you made the right choice?) He was my only horse for a long time. He obtained his Register of Merit on the racetrack and earned money in a few races. He stands 16.2 hh, and is an own son of AQHA Hall of Fame and multiple world champion racehorse Ronas Ryon and out of a superb Jet Deck/Spree bred mare. EJ was bought as a barrel horse prospect and we competed successfully together for a few years on the local rodeo circuits. Despite his race pedigree he is a very quiet horse, and after outgrowing my barrel racing phase, he has been used for a lesson horse, dressage horse, rope horse, pony horse, civil war re-enactment cavalry horse, and is now an extremely successful cowboy mounted shooting horse. He is happiest working, and EJ has done everything I have ever thrown at him and while he isn't a pet and doesn't like treats or constant petting, he does have his own personality and is a constant professional and only wants to learn his job and then have fun doing it, whatever that may be! He is a horse who expects his share of respect and gives it in return. He has never stepped a foot out of place while being my almost constant companion for the past 11 years. His amazing mental attitude and athleticism as well as his love of competition have taken him far over the years and children and adults alike have ridden him in many different situations. To ride EJ is to feel on top of the world, he is simply amazing. He has been with me through hell and back and God willing, will never leave my farm. (He was with me long before I had a farm!) This one horse has meant more to me and my family, and has taught us all more, than words can say.

This is a poem by an unknown author that
always makes me think of EJ.

When your day seems out of balance,
and so many things go wrong,                   when people fight around you,
and the day drags on so long.

When parents act like children,                       in-laws make you think Divorce,                      go out into your pasture...                                wrap your arms around your horse.
His gentle breath enfolds you,                          and he watches with those eyes.
He may not have a Phd,
but he is Oh so wise!

His head rests on your shoulder
You embrace him oh so tight.
He puts your world in balance,
and makes it seem all right.

The tears they soon stop flowing.
The tension now is eased.
The garbage has been lifted
and you're quiet and at peace.

So when you need the balance
from circumstances in your day
the best therapy you can seek
is out there eating hay!
Left, EJ and I carrying the American Flag at a rodeo. We got the job because he was the only sane barrel horse there!
